These days we don’t have a ton of time to spend in the kitchen. We work long hours, have families to tend to, soccer practice, books to read, and favorite television shows to watch. While it can be fun to spend hours in the kitchen dishing up love, it’s not always practical. You might remember this post I did last year on meal planning. Basically, I’m always looking for ways to save time and money. I’ve tried several different hacks that I’ve found on Pinterest and learned from Momma (she always knows best) along the way. Today, I’m sharing my 5 Kitchen Hacks to save you time and money in the kitchen. I find these to be pretty foolproof. I could have shared many others, but they either don’t work 100% of the time, weren’t very safe, or weren’t very useful.
1. ROLLING DOUGH
When you don’t have a rolling-pin, use a tall wine bottle. Remember to wash the outside first incase there are any germs or bacteria on it. Then coat it in flour and use to make dough. Great for making dumplings, pizza dough, pie dough, and homemade noodles. When you are done cooking, you can celebrate with a glass of wine, of course!
2. OPENING A CAN
If you don’t have a functional can opener, all you need to do is rub the top of the can on some concrete for 2-3 minutes. The friction will wear down the can. Then, use your hands to squeeze near the top of the can in order to create pressure. Your can should open with a clean cut. No mess and cuts involved!
3. CUTTING SMALL FRUIT
If you have an egg slicer, you can use it not only to slice eggs, but also small fruits like strawberries. Just don’t be in a rush or you could break one of the slicers. Easy does it and you will have sliced fruit in no time flat!
4. WHITENING TEETH
In just 10 minutes a day, you can have whiter teeth using bananas. How is that possible?! Banana peel has important minerals your teeth need to stay white: potassium, magnesium, and manganese. Simply take one side of a banana. Cover the rest in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. (It will last up to two days in the refrigerator.) Using the banana peel, rub the white side on your teeth for 2 minutes like you are brushing your teeth. Let the mixture sit on your teeth for up to 10 minutes. Using a wet toothbrush, brush the mixture off of your teeth. Repeat this process every day for up to two weeks. Since it can be difficult to notice color changes, I recommend taking a picture after each treatment. When you are done using your peels, you can make this healthy, banana ice cream treat.
5. PORTIONING FOOD
Muffin tins can be used to create evil things… like cupcakes (I only kidding). I love you, dear cupcakes! However, they are also great for dividing food servings. When vegetables and fruits are served on plates, they spread out making the servings appear larger. With this method, you can get your family to eat their fruits and veggies more willingly. As an added bonus, it’s a tray which makes it easier to handle and less messy for kids.
