For the past year or so I have been fascinated with plate art; particularly the shiny, metallic, and black and white motif ones. Go ahead and call me an ostrich! I don’t mind at all, because it’s true. I love everything gold, metallic, shiny, sparkly! When Kate Spade came out with the Larabee Road collection I was so smitten with the design that I decided to see what goodness I could come up with on my own. My brain immediately started to think of all the possibilities… stripes, geometric designs, words. With my mind in full creative mode, I decided I didn’t want my plates to be all matchy matchy. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but my mind just had too many brilliant ideas running through it. Enough about me, I will show you what I did so you can make these adorable little plates.
Plain ceramic white plates (mine were from Goodwill. Holla!)
Paint pen(s) (I used Craftsmart)
Wet wash cloth
Stencil(s) (optional- I didn’t use any)
An open mind (seriously)
For my plates, I decided I would do one polka dot and the rest with words that reflect my personality. If you aren’t the artistic type (like myself), I highly recommend Googling your ideas and finding something to replicate. For instance, I Googled different fonts for the word “Shine” to find a font style that I liked and felt comfortable enough to try on my plate. While that is not exactly a stencil, it’s much easier to copy an image from a computer than from something in your head.
I also recommend practicing your design on paper before using the plate. You will want to get used to how the paint pen feels before you create your design. If you DO mess up on your plate, quickly wipe off your mistake with a wet cloth. When finished with design, bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes to ensure the design stays in tact.
What do you think? I’m no artist, but I think my plates turned out pretty well. Geometric, marbleizing, and stripes are becoming popular designs so I may create some plates with these motifs in the future.
