You may be one of those people who call Valentine’s Day a “Hallmark holiday” or “good chocolate sales eve”. You may wear black and walk around with a smug look on your face and avoiding the women grinning from ear to ear because they’ve received a bouquet of flowers and chocolates from their “luuuvah”,cuddle bug”, [insert the gushiest, eye rolling term you’ve heard] . No matter how you mark the day, I want to give you a fresh look in to how the holiday came about.
St. Valentine was a Roman Priest during the reign of emperor Claudius. Claudius was big on persecuting the church at that time, and also preventing young people to marry. Claudius thought young, single soldiers fought better because they had less to lose if they were to die in war. I can just see St. Valentine saying, “Oh no! If you want to marry and you are young, the Christian church will secretly marry you!” And all the young Romans said, “Hayyyyy!” Well, you can guess what eventually happened. St. Valentine was caught and tortured in a prison for violating the edict.
Sounds horrible, right?! Well here’s the miracle in it all…
Asterius, one of the men who was to judge him, had a daughter who was blind. St. Valentine is said to have prayed with the girl and healed her, revealing the power of prayer to Asterius and resulting in his faith in Christ.
Valentine also became close friends with the girl he healed. Unfortunately, the act of healing didn’t influence Valentine’s fate. Before he was executed, he left his new friend a letter signed, “from your Valentine.”
Valentines Day is not just about marriage- it’s about sacrifice, faith, and unconquerable benevolence between friends. What better way to celebrate than to throw a party for all these great things?!
